Docs for Kids

Arif Hossein, ETV, Dhaka / Arif Hossein, ETV, Dhaka
Ole Tornbjerg / Denmark, Bangladesh / 2002 / 28 min.

The main character of this documentary is thirteen-year-old Arif, who lives in the slums on the outskirts of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Because his father's earnings are not enough to provide for the family, Arif, like approximately ten million other children in Bangladesh, is forced to work. Arif's bold ambition to become a journalist begins to be realized from the moment he is able to get job as a reporter in the Bangladesh TVstation ETV. Once a week he prepares a highly-watched news program, which is oriented to the dismal situation of working children, who are not able to attend school. Many of these children also perform exceptionally dangerous work without any type of safety precautions or protective clothing. He knows well from his own experiences that without education it is difficult to escape poverty. Therefore, he tries together with other similarly-minded children to help his peers achieve a better life. The International Labor Organization estimates that globally there are over 246 million children who are forced to work full-time.
