Jan Sibik, a photographer

He was born  in 1963. Since 1985 he has taken more than 240 trips to countries all over the world, but mainly to the crisis areas. He documented the fall of the communist regimes in Europe, massacres in Sierra Leone and Liberia, famine in Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia, wars in the Balkans, genocide in Rwanda, etc. Over the recent years, Sibik has focused his attention on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the whole year 2004 he spent taking photos about the AIDS epidemics in Ukraine and his photos from 2005 are from Sri Lanka (tsunami), North Korea (life under the communist regime), Vatican (the Pope´s funeral), Ramallah (the funeral of Yasir Arafat), Gaza (departure of the Israeli settlers) and New Orleans (hurricane Katrina).

Jan Sibik was awarded thirty-nine times by the Czech Press Photo, two times as a principal winner. He was awarded three times by the Fuji Press Photographer and this year also by the most prestigious competition for photographers - World Press Photo. Having photo exhibitions all over the world, he is also an author of two books of photographs ”Kdyby všechny slzy svĕta” (1997, If All the Tears of the World) and “Ďábel v nás” (2001, Devil Inside Us).
