Sahraa Karimi, a film director
Sahraa was born in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1981. She was granted asylum in Slovakia, where she took language course of Slovak as a preparation for the entry exam to the university. Now she is studying documentary at The Academy of Music and Performing Arts (VŠMU) in Bratislava. She starred in Daughter of the Sun (1999), the winning film at film festivals in Montreal, Canada and Bratislava, Slovakia; in White Dream (2000), a film directed by Hamid Jebeli, and in Who is Sahraa?(2002), a documentary directed by Martin Hossein Fazeli. Sahraa has directed several short films and documentaries herself, for example At School With Foreigners (2003), Telephone (2003), Gabo (2004), Searching for a Dream (2005), and Light and Dark (2005). Sahraa won the second prize in the Student Film Category at Femina Film Festival 2005 in the Czech Republic, and also took part in Zlin Film Festival Zlinsky Pes, Czech Republic, International Festival of Documentary and Animation Film in Leipzig, Germany and International Festival of Documentary and Short Film, Bilbao, Spain.
