Alison O’Daniel – Masterclass

The class will begin with a consideration of Tobin Siebers theory of Complex Embodiment in Disability Theory. Through discussion and viewings of short films, we will consider how the medical and social models of disability intersect and diverge and form cultural expectations. We’ll focus on the lived experiences of disabled folks as valuable contributions to everyone and culture at large with a focus on artistic and creative output. This will primarily be discussed through examples of contemporary hybrid practices of documentary, photography, performance, dance, sound and moving image that challenge dominant ways of communicating, looking, and storytelling in favor of a more intimate or embodied approach to representation, content and narrative. We will also discuss experimental working processes and narratives intended to expand conceptions of how to create, when the work is finished and how that is determined, and ways that practice becomes embodied and complex. The workshop will include screenings, readings, and discussion.

Masterclass follows a prior screening of The Tuba Thieves on 8.11., 19:00 at VŠMU.
